The Great Remodel
A Tale of Two Remodels…
In 2002, we purchased an 1895 four-square single family home in the Uptown neighborhood of Minneapolis, Minnesota. After living in the home for 6 years, we decided that we liked the neighborhood enough to spend the rest of our lives in the house.
As with most homes there were a number of things that we loved and a lot of things we felt were inadequate or missing. We loved the original woodwork, the traditional floorplan, and the sizeable kitchen for a house of its vintage. We didn't love the lack of a first floor bathroom, the scars from previous remodels, the lack of cabinet and counterspace in the kitchen, and most of all the one-car garage.
At first we weren't sure if we wanted to remodel or simply move to a different house. But after spending a couple days with our realtor, we decided that any other house we would buy would need just as much work. And besides, we really loved our house despite its flaws. Therefore, we decided to remodel.
Before we began our first remodeling project we tried to find detailed stories of other people's remodelling experiences. We wanted to get some idea of what was in store for us. Sadly, we couldn't find anything on the Internet that satisfied this desire. We created this blog to document our experiences in order to help other homeowner's see what's involved with a whole-house remodelling project. We hope you find this information helpful in planning your own project(s).
