April 30, 2008 (Day 94)

Natural Stain

Today we had to approve the stain color for the floors. We are committed to returning the floors to their original color. It turns out that the original birch floors were stained a natural color. Over the last 110 years, the wood has darkened a little. In order to match the new floors to the old floors, the flooring contractor will mix a small amount of brown stain into the natural stain. This "custom blend" will only be applied to the new flooring. A couple coats of orange shellac on top and the color will be a very close match to the original floors.

We also approved the stucco color. The house was painted pink when we bought it 6 years ago. Unfortunately, painted stucco tends to peel after a few years. We’ve decided to keep the same color scheme. The house will therefore be redashed with 3/4% "Flamingo". This time, the color will be integral to the stucco so it should last 20 years instead of 3 or 4 years like paint.
